and so, is it possible to share users and rsmembership data across all sites ?

Also, how do you handle Joomla upgrade ?

Yes, it's possible to share users and RSMembership data. All sites should use same MySQL server and MySQL users of slave sites should have access to database of main site.

Joomla upgrade is handled depending on configuration, it's performed in each site which uses own database tables.
