But it's better to create new style which extends main style and have at least custom overall_header.html and overall_footer.html. It will to separate your custom code and easier update style.

If all sites use same tables, it's only required to update extensions on master site.

If each site uses own tables, an extension is updated on each site. There can be issues with updating an extension if it doesn't use native Joomla installer.

We can't guarantee that it will work on Joomla 3.4 correctly and it's better to update to Joomla 3.6.5 first.
