If I need to install extensions on the mini-sites, does that mean MultiSites only helps with the cloning and maintenance of Joomla? Also do I need to have any concerns regarding which template company I choose to use?

... updates etc. 3. Your mini site can load Extensions from main site, but it will also require sharing of Menus from main site. So still better to install the extension separately in each site.
