... template but hosted as individual (normal setup) sites? Also once a site it built in MightySites using the Master Slave, same database, different templates setup, can I split it off to its own separate Joomla setup?

Yes, template files are stored in same folder, but Joomla stores template settings in database, so each site can have different settings.
Probably except Yootheme templates because they store settings in file.

... which shows the avatar from phpBB. The attachment contains custom layout files for mod_login for Joomla 2.5 and 3. Extract required archive into /templates/your_joomla_template/html/mod_login/ folder (create if not exists), next select 'p8pbb' layout in login module's settings.

The templates settings limitation is applied to Joomla 1.5 only, if two sites are using same Joomla installation and same templates.
Template width depends on the template itself, not on MightySites.
