I believe this extension may be what I am looking for.

We are a small professional association with around 75 members.

I have collected a lot of information about our members by creating custom fields and field groups in the user profile.

I would now like to produce a member directory containing some or all of this information. Is this possible with this extension.

If you have SQL query to load all data, yes, you can have a table with users data.

Is this report able to connect with external database? Or it just limited to joomla database only?
The other thing can this report produce charts / graphs ?

You can configure external connections and next select them per report.
There are no graphs and charts out the box. You can create them via custom PHP layouts.
