does AlterArticles work in frontend submission, too?

Probably custom frontend article form layout can help - it will display required fields.

In general, or do you mean it might work for "Alter Articles"?
If yes, any chance you might test it and write a news post about it?

Yes, it can work, but custom layout is unique for each Joomla template and requires custom coding.
So it's not simple and most users won't use this feature because they don't have a developer
